Disneyland, the happiest place on Earth synonymous with Mickey Mouse and overpriced trinkets of Disney goodness is the last place you’d expect to hear of an outbreak of legionnaires disease.
The sprawling 100 acre resort voluntarily closed its doors to the public last week, after two bacteria-laden water cooling towers were identified as the cause of an outbreak of legionnaires disease, which is a bacterial lung infection, and a severe, often lethal, form of pneumonia caused by the bacterium Legionella pneumophilia.
The bacteria spreads rapidly through water vapor or mist and highlights the importance of maintaining and cleaning your ventilation systems. Although Legionnaires disease can be treated with antibiotics, prevention is always better than cure. Variable internal temperatures, stagnant water and poor maintenance make ideal breeding conditions for the bacteria to grow and spread.
Proper maintenance is tantamount to eliminating and reducing the danger of Legionnaires disease. Adopting a multifaceted approach to combatting this potentially fatal disease is something that we champion at ECS, and is reflected in our designing, installing and maintenance of all of our customer’s air conditioning and ventilation systems.
Employ these simple steps to safeguard yourself, and potentially avoid the from developing in your ventilation system.
• Regular on-site and system assessments, that will highlight any possible risks. If any issues are identified, both chemical and non-chemical remedies are available.
• Diligent monitoring of all of our installed systems, by certified engineers, and correct and proper maintenance of heating and cooling systems.
Ensuring proper regimens are in place is at the forefront of what we do. If it’s good enough for Mickey and friends, then it’s good enough for us!
