As the capital is in the midst of experiencing a heat wave which rivals most holiday destinations, you could be forgiven for walking out of your front door and thinking you are in the south of France, Sharm el Sheik or Marbella.
With low humidity and winds under 10%, the next few days have been forecasted to be a sun worshiping dream.
Heat Wave Benefits:
The sun effects the body in both good and bad ways. Not only will it give your skin that sun-kissed glow, the vitamin d from the sun rays can also enhance and brighten your mood. Natural sunlight has been used as a treatment aid in depression and seasonal effective disorder, with winter months requiring a light box to boost the serotonin happy hormone in the brain. That hormone is also a great stress revealer, helping to lower levels of cortisol in the brain….so if your boss seems stressed today in the heat wave, get him eating his sandwich in the sunlight for a happier afternoon at work.
Heat Wave Negatives:
However, its not all fun and games as the NHS and various health organisations warn us of the risks of worshiping the sun gods as we lay rotating like a chicken rotisserie for that perfect glow. Apart from the obvious dehydration and sun stroke, too much sun exposure in the heat wave has also been shown to reap havoc on the eyes. Studies have shown that too much sun causes cataracts, with the elder generations most at risk. A decent pair of protective sun glasses are a must this summer, as well as plenty of water and lashings of sun screen. Other major health issues include heat rash, wrinkles and of course the worst skin cancer.
For us, its stay in and stay cool and hydrated as we spend our days as keyboard warriors looking out at the world passing by the window. On the bright side, the office air conditioning installation is pretty epic. US (1) vs SWEAT (0).
