Summer is finally here! As the first of two May bank holidays are over, Britain looks set to be warming up, leaving outdoor fun on the top of the “to do” list for the next few weekends, and we have chosen a little green finger magic to keep us busy.
If you have been struggling to find something to do that doesn’t cost an entire week’s wages, why not try turning your hands to something like planting seeds? Apart from the fact that it can be cheap and rewarding (tasty too), studies have also shown that a little touch of gardening is great for mental health.
Those of us stuck in built-up suburban areas, with nothing more than a local co-op to grab some fresh produce may like to start off with something small and easy that you can grow on a windowsill – herbs are a perfect choice.
Herbs are extremely versatile plants and can make beautiful bright ornamental features of any window display. With low maintenance, they are also cheap and easy to begin, thus are the perfect starting point for any home gardening sanctuary.
If you are new to green finger fun then we recommend that you try fast growing herbs like chives basil and rosemary. Great to add to any summer dish, and as an added bonus, they grow back when you cut them.
Green finger tips for a good grow? ..
well drained soil
soil ph neutral to alkaline
Don’t forget to maintain a good constant temperature in the room, climate control is key with grown plants, a greenhouse isn’t just for keeping out the insects! All seeds will have an optimum temperature to flourish at, so make sure your residential air conditioning isn’t on too high or the heating isn’t cranked all the way up either. Good luck our green finger friends and happy planting.
